Deep in the forest, a handsome young man named Bau spends his days chopping wood and brewing rice wine among the trees. Lonely yet devoted, he often whispers to the mountain spirits, “Please send me someone to share my life with.” But his prayers seem unanswered, except for the deer that trample his crops at night. Then, one fateful morning, Bau stumbles upon a mysterious stranger lying motionless near his fields—a powerfully built man with rough, sun-darkened skin, massive arms, and sharp tusks, surrounded by shattered wine bottles. Bau’s heart leaps as he gazes at the unconscious figure. “At last,” he murmurs with joy, “the gods have answered me! Come, my friend, let me take you home.” Gently, he lifts the stranger, dreaming of the companionship he has longed for all these years.
